Last year in a fun-filled afternoon on November 12, 2016, California State Parks and Coastside State Parks Association celebrated the 144th anniversary of the first lighting of the Fresnel lens.
Guided history walks, live music, a native plant sale and children's activities were hosted by the Pigeon Point docents. Music played through the afternoon by The Lighthouse String Band and the Stragglyrs. Mid-afternoon, the Native Daughters of the Golden West presented a check to the Light Up the Future restoration campaign.
Throughout the day, local author JoAnn Semones was onsite to discuss her books and personalize a message inside any copy that was purchased. "Shipwrecks, Scalawags & Scavengers", her book on Pigeon Point tells the history of the Lighthouse and the shipwrecks along the coast in an easy to read essay style. Her later books "Hard Luck Coast", "Sea of Troubles" and "Pirates, Pinnacles and Petticoats" explore the stories for other lighthouses along the coast in the same manner.
Then, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the Fog Signal Building remained open to show off the magnificent First Order Fresnel lens. It was a fun day!
The date has been set for the 2017 Anniversary Celebration for November 18. Details on specific activities will be posted closer to the event date.
